Unlike coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana inherited Hyderabad — an already well-established IT, pharmaceutical, and services hub — at the time of its formation in 2014, giving the new state a significant head start in services-sector development compared to many newly formed Indian states.

💻 Key economic strengths

• IT and IT-enabled services — Hyderabad (particularly the HITEC City area) is one of India's major IT hubs, hosting numerous domestic and multinational technology companies.
• Pharmaceuticals — Hyderabad is often called the "Bulk Drug Capital of India," with a dense cluster of pharmaceutical and biotech manufacturing.
• Agriculture — despite its urban IT profile, Telangana remains substantially agrarian outside Hyderabad, with significant irrigation development since 2014 expanding cultivable area.

💡 Post-formation growth priorities

Since 2014, Telangana's government has emphasised expanding irrigation infrastructure (to reduce dependence on rain-fed agriculture), promoting industrial growth beyond Hyderabad into other regional towns, and continuing to build on its existing IT/pharma advantages.
