Telangana's major crops, its transformative irrigation projects, and state-specific agricultural schemes.
Telangana is a significant producer of rice, cotton, maize, and turmeric (particularly around Nizamabad, a major turmeric trading centre). Historically dependent on erratic rainfall and groundwater, the state's agriculture has been transformed by major irrigation investment since 2014.
The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, on the Godavari river, is one of the world's largest multi-stage lift irrigation projects, designed to lift and transport water uphill across long distances to irrigate large areas of Telangana that previously depended heavily on unreliable rainfall β a flagship post-2014 infrastructure initiative.
Mission Kakatiya, launched by the Telangana government, focused on restoring and rejuvenating the state's traditional irrigation tanks β many originally built centuries ago under Kakatiya-era engineering β to improve water storage and groundwater recharge for agriculture.
General concepts like cropping seasons (Kharif/Rabi/Zaid) and MSP mechanisms are covered in our UPSC Economy β Agriculture notes; this page focuses on what's distinctly Telangana-specific.
