๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Overview

The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) functions under the Department of Defence Research & Development (DDR&D), Ministry of Defence. It is the R&D wing of the Ministry, with a vision to empower India with cutting-edge defence technologies and a mission to achieve self-reliance in critical defence technologies and systems.

Motto: "เคฌเคฒเคธเฅเคฏ เคฎเฅ‚เคฒเค‚ เคตเคฟเคœเฅเคžเคพเคจเคฎเฅ" (Balasya Mulam Vigyanam) โ€” "The Source of Strength is Science."
  • Vision: Empowering the nation with state-of-the-art indigenous Defence technologies and systems.
  • Mission: Design, develop and lead to production state-of-the-art sensors, weapon systems, platforms and allied equipment for the Defence Services; provide technological solutions to optimise combat effectiveness and troop well-being; build a strong indigenous technology base.

๐Ÿ“œ History & Formation

  • DRDO was formed in 1958 by merging the Technical Development Establishment (TDE) of the Indian Army and the Directorate of Technical Development & Production (DTDP) of the Indian Ordnance Factories with the Defence Science Organisation (DSO), under Jawaharlal Nehru's administration.
  • Started as a small organisation with 10 establishments/laboratories.
  • A separate Department of Defence Research and Development was formed in 1980, which later administered DRDO.
  • Defence Research & Development Service (DRDS) constituted in 1979 as a Group 'A' Officers service โ€” scientists directly under the Ministry of Defence.
  • At its peak, DRDO had a network of ~52 laboratories โ€” now streamlined to ~41 + 5 DYSLs after rationalisation/mergers.

๐ŸŽฏ Key Historical Programmes

Indigenous radar programme (from 1970s)IAF's covert radar indigenisation effort, working with DRDO's LRDE lab, shaped the Indra and Rohini radar series.

Rationalisation & Lab Mergers (Recent)

  • Defence Terrain Research Laboratory (DTRL) merged with the Snow and Avalanche Studies Establishment (SASE), renamed as the Defence Geological Research Establishment (DGRE).
  • As of 2020, ANURAG and LASTEC no longer function as independent entities โ€” staff relocated to DRDO labs in Hyderabad.
  • The Defence Food Research Laboratory was merged with the Defence Research Development Establishment (DRDE), Gwalior.
  • DRDO is planning a new research lab in Lucknow.

๐Ÿ‘ค Leadership & Organisational Structure

  • Secretary, DDR&D and Chairman DRDO (additional charge, June 2026): Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh, IAS โ€” took over from 31 May 2026, after Dr Samir V. Kamat's tenure (Aug 2022โ€“May 2026).
  • Notable past Chairmen: Dr G. Satheesh Reddy (2018โ€“22, missile systems); Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam ("Father of India's military missile programme," led Project Devil, later 11th President); Dr Tessy Thomas ("Missile Woman of India," Agni programme).
  • DRDO is organised into 7 Technology Clusters (domain-specific R&D, each headed by a Director General) and 5 Corporate Clusters (cross-cutting administrative/strategic functions).
Hierarchy: Raksha Mantri โ†’ Secretary DDR&D & Chairman DRDO โ†’ DRDO Management Council โ†’ 7 Technology Clusters + 5 Corporate Clusters โ†’ 41 Laboratories + 5 DYSLs.

๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ Remote Sensing & Satellite-Related Work at DRDO

DRDO is a defence R&D organisation, not a space agency like ISRO โ€” but several labs use remote sensing, GIS and satellite imagery for defence applications.

ItemDetail
SASE / DGRESnow & avalanche remote sensing โ€” uses optical/microwave satellite imagery to identify avalanche-prone Himalayan regions; publishes the Avalanche Warning Bulletin.
DEAL (Dehradun)Satellite communication & imaging โ€” software radios, data links, microwave/millimetre-wave communication, satellite image reception/processing.
CAIR (Bengaluru)Developed 'Prajna,' an AI-enabled satellite imaging system handed to the Union Home Ministry for security/surveillance applications.
India's primary civilian/military satellite programme (earth observation, Cartosat, RISAT, etc.) is run by ISRO, not DRDO โ€” DRDO's role is largely downstream: processing satellite data for surveillance, terrain/avalanche analysis, and missile guidance/navigation.

  • A 9-member committee under the PMO, led by former PSA Prof. K. VijayRaghavan, submitted "Redefining Defence Research and Development."
  • Aims to transform DRDO into a leaner, DARPA-like institution โ€” R&D only, transferring prototype development/production to private industry & PSUs.
  • Proposes a Department of Defence Science, Technology and Innovation (DDSTI) and a Defence Technology Council (DTC) headed by the PM.
  • Recommends consolidating ~40 labs into ~10 national-level facilities plus 5 national test facilities open to private-sector use.
  • Focus shift toward next-gen tech: directed energy weapons, photonics, quantum systems, AI. DRDO has reportedly agreed to implement ~60% of major recommendations.

๐ŸŽฏ Exam Angle

Prelims likes to test lab-location-function triads (DRDL/RCI/ASL โ†” Hyderabad โ†” missiles; NPOL โ†” Kochi โ†” naval physical/oceanographic; NSTL โ†” Visakhapatnam โ†” naval systems) and which cluster a given product belongs to. Mains rewards discussing DRDO 2.0's DARPA-like reform vision alongside India's broader defence self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) push โ€” the IGMDP-to-Agni-VI missile lineage is a strong illustrative example of indigenous capability building over four decades.
