How Telangana's state legislature is structured, and how it makes law.
The directly elected lower house of the state legislature, with members elected from territorial constituencies across Telangana for a term of 5 years. It is the primary law-making body at the state level, and the Chief Minister must command its confidence to remain in office.
Telangana retained a Legislative Council following the 2014 bifurcation, as provided for under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014. As with other states that have one, Council members are elected through a mix of methods (by MLAs, local bodies, graduates, teachers) and nominated by the Governor β not directly elected by the general public.
Bills generally require passage by the Legislative Assembly (and Council, where applicable), followed by the Governor's assent. As with the Union Parliament, Money Bills can only be introduced in the Legislative Assembly, with the Council's role limited to recommendations.
This topic frequently tests whether candidates know that Telangana is among the states that retain a Legislative Council, and understand its composition and election method.
