The major tribal communities of Telangana, their customs, and their historical and contemporary significance.
Telangana is home to several significant tribal (Scheduled Tribe) communities, concentrated mainly in the forested and hilly districts of the north and east. Key communities include the Gonds (one of the largest tribal groups in central India, with a significant presence in Telangana), the Koya tribe (concentrated in the Godavari basin districts), the Lambadas (Banjaras) β a historically nomadic community now settled across the state β and the Chenchus, a smaller, historically forest-dwelling community found in the Nallamala forest region.
The Sammakka Saralamma Jatara, held biennially at Medaram, is one of the largest tribal religious gatherings in the world, drawing millions of devotees, and is central to the Koya community's cultural and religious identity. It commemorates the legendary tribal heroines Sammakka and Saralamma, who are said to have resisted oppressive rule and become deified as protective goddesses.
Areas with significant tribal populations in Telangana fall under special constitutional protections, including provisions of the Fifth Schedule, which provides for special administrative arrangements in "Scheduled Areas" to protect tribal land rights and prevent exploitation, alongside targeted state welfare schemes for tribal development.
