El Niño (warm Pacific waters) is generally linked to a weaker Indian monsoon; La Niña (cool waters) to a stronger one. The retreat of the subtropical westerly jet stream and onset of the tropical easterly jet stream mark the start of the monsoon. The Indian Ocean Dipole is a separate factor that can offset El Niño's effect.
