Indian History

General Indian History — Ancient, Medieval and Modern — as tested in the Prelims Screening Test (distinct from AP-specific history in Mains).

🏛️ Ancient India

Salient features of the Indus Valley Civilization and the Vedic Age, the emergence of Buddhism and Jainism as reform movements, and the Mauryan Empire and Gupta Empire — covering their administration, socio-economic and religious conditions, art and architecture, and literature. This section closes with Harshavardhana and his achievements.

🏛️ Medieval India

The Chola administrative system (a distinctively South Indian, well-documented model of local self-government), followed by the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empire — their administration, socio-economic and religious conditions, art, architecture, language and literature. This period also covers the Bhakti and Sufi movements, Shivaji and the rise of the Maratha Empire, and the advent of Europeans to the subcontinent.

🏜️ Modern India

  • The 1857 Revolt and its impact — causes, spread, suppression, and consequences for British policy.
  • The rise and consolidation of British power in India, and the resulting changes in administration and in the social and cultural spheres.
  • Social and religious reform movements of the 19th and 20th centuries (Brahmo Samaj, Arya Samaj, Aligarh Movement, and others).
  • The Indian National Movement — its various stages (Moderate phase, Extremist phase, Gandhian era) and important contributors and contributions from different parts of the country, not just the national leadership.
  • Post-Independence consolidation and reorganisation within the country — integration of princely states and the linguistic reorganisation of states.

💡 Why This Is a Separate Subject

Note that this general Indian History subject (Prelims Subject 1) is distinct from the AP-specific Social & Cultural History tested in Mains Paper I (Satavahanas, Vishnukundins, the Andhra Movement, etc. — see the AP History & Culture page). Prelims tests the pan-India historical narrative; Mains goes deep specifically into Andhra Pradesh's regional history.

πŸ’‘ Key Facts

  • This is the general, pan-India History subject tested in the Prelims Screening Test — not to be confused with the AP-specific history tested in Mains Paper I.
  • Harshavardhana is typically the closing figure of the Ancient India segment before the syllabus moves to medieval dynasties.
  • The Chola administrative system (local self-government, village assemblies) is a favourite standalone question area distinct from Chola military history.
  • 1857 Revolt causes are commonly tested as a categorised list: political, economic, social, religious and military causes.
  • Post-independence consolidation (princely state integration, States Reorganisation 1956) bridges directly into the AP-specific Andhra Movement content in Mains Paper I — revise them together for efficiency.

πŸ”– 60-Second Revision

  • Ancient: IVC, Vedic Age, Buddhism/Jainism, Mauryas, Guptas, Harshavardhana.
  • Medieval: Chola administration, Delhi Sultanate, Mughals, Bhakti/Sufi, Marathas, Europeans' arrival.
  • Modern: 1857 Revolt, British consolidation, reform movements, INM stages.
  • Post-Independence: princely state integration, 1956 States Reorganisation.
  • Keep this distinct from AP-specific history (Mains Paper I) — different subject, different depth.
