Social and cultural history of Andhra Pradesh, plus ancient/medieval Indian history β Mains Paper I territory.
Pre-historic cultures of the Andhra region, followed by the Satavahanas (one of the earliest major Deccan dynasties) and the Ikshvakus — covering their socio-economic and religious conditions, literature, art and architecture. This is followed by the Vishnukundins, the Eastern Chalukyas of Vengi, and the Andhra Cholas — their society, religion, the growth of the Telugu language, and art/architecture.
The various major and minor dynasties that ruled Andhradesa between the 11th and 16th centuries, their socio-religious and economic conditions, and — critically — the growth of Telugu language and literature and the development of art and architecture in this period (this includes the Kakatiyas and the influence of the Vijayanagara Empire on the Andhra region).
The arrival of European trading companies and their trade centres, Andhra under East India Company rule, the impact of the 1857 Revolt on Andhra, and the establishment of full British rule. This is followed by the region's socio-cultural awakening, the Justice Party/Self-Respect Movement, and the growth of the nationalist movement in Andhra between 1885 and 1947 — including the roles of Socialists and Communists, the Anti-Zamindari and Kisan (peasant) movements, and the growth of nationalist poetry, revolutionary literature, Nataka Samasthalu (drama troupes), and women's participation in the freedom struggle.
The origin and growth of the Andhra Movement, the role of the various Andhra Mahasabhas, prominent leaders, and the events leading to the formation of Andhra State in 1953 — catalysed by Potti Sriramulu's fast unto death. The role of the press, the library movement, and folk/tribal culture in sustaining the movement are also examinable.
The events leading to the formation of the full Andhra Pradesh state — the Visalandhra Mahasabha, the States Reorganisation Commission and its recommendations, the "Gentlemen's Agreement" (1956, between Andhra and Telangana leaders on safeguards), and important social and cultural events in Andhra Pradesh between 1956 and 2014 (culminating in the state's 2014 bifurcation into AP and Telangana).
